Why was the UK oil estimated to run out in 1995 and not the more likely 2095? For several reasons the UK government has always been concerned with the possibility of Scottish Independence. This concern was heightened with the discovery of large oil fields in Scottish waters.

In the 1970s the UK economy was in a terrible state but oil became its' saviour. It fueled the boom times that has brought the UK back from the brink. Without oil the UK economic story of the last few decades would have been very different.

After many years exploring the North Sea, companies are now increasingly turning to the Atlantic side of Scottish waters in the quest for new fields.

The road from Fort William to the fishing port of Mallaig has been given a major upgrade, part financed by an oil company. This area is seen to become an important regions in these new West coast oil sectors.

I agree that the UK oil will last for several decades to come. But, I think 2095 is stretching it a bit. Perhaps 2060 would be more realistic. The UK industry will long outlive the oil in this country. But people will work in other parts of the world.
